Debbie McGuirk-Coulson – First Kyu
Started Tuesday 6th Jan 2006...
It was Christmas 2005 and a friend had mentioned about trying kick boxing. I thought why not?
I thought to myself, as the day came closer "What was i doing?" I was nearly 38 and well over 16st, but I had to start somewhere. The only thing I was capable of kicking was a stone on the floor. "Fitness" was non existent in my life, I was a couch potato. What with my kids, hubby and the TV that was my life but hey one session, that wasn't going to kill me...was it?!
I was petrified walking into my first class, the fears and worries, you name it I felt it! Were people going to be friendly, was i going to get battered or hurt, was I going to come out in one piece? What if I was with a black belt?
All I can say is "How wrong I was!".
Everyone was so friendly and encouraging, not at all judgmental, a fantastic group of people. In fact some have turned out to be my closest friends, giving me support and advice throughout my gradings and all unconditionally.
I didn’t have any fitness at all when I started, so all I could do was get fitter. I just built it up on a weekly basis. Rather than thinking " I can’t" I thought " I can" ...the next time I would aim to do more even if it was just one exercise... I just smiled more and more as the weeks went by...I went from being so unfit to becoming the fittest that I had been in years and enjoying it too!
All I can say is was the best decision I have ever made and couldn’t imagine my life without EKCA. Having a great Instructor...Sensei Mark Featherstone, with his encouragement and belief in me, saying that "I could" was priceless. To be a part of the MK ECKA club has been a life changing experience. It has given me the confidence to enter competitions and do well, even internationally which is something I would never have dreamt of.
I'm now 10st 13lbs and have gone from a size 22/24 to a 10/12, however, the weight issue got lost along the way, in the fun of learning and becoming fit and loving what I was doing....
Who would have guessed it? Two and a half years ago little old me? Just shows anything is possible!!!
Me when I started!
The new me!
